As the sun crept lower in the skyline Jacob glanced down the beach to the old caves located on the beach. He felt his curiosity pulling him to take a look inside before it got too late in the day. Jacob loved more that anything-ancient places. Travels to Turkey and Asia fascinated him as a traveller. The history and old cities seemed to explode his imagination. He would think to himself, “wow, there were people here 1000’s of years ago walking on this same path”. That’s just cool he thought to himself. Then he allowed his imagination to wander and wondered what kind of people were here in this place thousands of years ago. This place has 3000 years of history and it was one of the big incentives for him to make this a destination. As Jacob approached the cave, it was wondrous in its historical appearance. No matter how old he was, currently in his 40’s, climbing up rocks and hills and trees was something he would never give up. Like a 12-year-old boy, he climbed over a fence meant to keep people from climbing the rocks and falling to the ground. Jacob was terrible about following the rules in such places. So, he tightened the strap on his beach sandals to make sure they wouldn’t slip on the rocks and he started to climb. The stones stuck out of the rocks like pimples on a teenager. The stones were part of the rock but made it seem like football-sized handholds. As he climbed the side of the cave area he felt one of the stones slip out of its space and fall down the side of the hill. The hill was steep but it was solid rock. The last thing he wanted to happen was for him to slip the 15 plus feet to the rocks on the beach. The fall probably wouldn’t have hurt him seriously but it would have been one of those falls that create the scrapes that required you to change the bandages every day of his vacation.

As the sun crept lower to the horizon, Jacob gazed down the beach. The public area extended almost as far as the eye could see, but just beyond the border, a rocky hill sharply rose. A cliff had formed facing the water, and when the tide was high enough it would crack into the base. The rhythmic sound could be heard down the coast if one was paying attention. The erosion of the rock was evident in the shadow that was present at that time of the day.

Jacob had noted the hill earlier on his stroll, and he noted the lack of people near that end of the beach now.

He pushed himself to his feet and rubbed his hands together to clean off the sand. He was going exploring. He loved historical places more than anything. The antiquity of the old cities… just thinking about the fact that thousands of years ago people were walking on the same ground that he was on, right at that moment, exploded his mind.

No one noticed Jacob as he made his way to the end of the public beach. Families had started to pack up their blankets and round up their children; couples were caught up with each other and the romance of the ocean at sunset.

As Jacob approached the wall of rock and sand, he could see how wondrous it was in its artfully eroded appearance. There was a makeshift fence all along the border, keeping the public on its assigned side and leading up and over the dune and out of sight. Jacob hadn’t noticed this fence from far away because it was made from sticks and brush—though sturdy—and blended in with the natural surroundings. No matter.

Though Jacob was now in his forties and the fence stretched a couple of feet above his head, he still had the climbing agility of a ninja. Like a 12-year-old boy, he maneuvered over the fence that was meant to keep people from foolish endangerment. Jacob was terrible about obeying such barriers. He almost saw them as a challenge.

He made it to the other side with no problem, and without wasting any time he tightened the straps on his beach sandals and began his ascent. The stones stuck out of the rocks like pimples on a teenager. They were such perfectly-sized handholds that Jacob would have sworn the wall was made for climbing, just asking for him to continue on. As he scaled and quickly gained altitude, he felt the stone that his right foot was on slip out of its space and fall down the side of the hill. He instantly snapped back to reality, jabbing his toes into the hole created by the ejected stone and flattening his body to the rock wall. He was about fifteen feet up, and while a fall would probably not seriously hurt him, he would likely end up with a nuisance of an injury that would ruin the rest of his vacation.
